Using Technology To Promote Literacy for Life: Blurring the Lines Between Special and General Education to Facilitate Life-Long Learning Skills
-
Abstract
-
How can the use of emerging technology tools improve the literacy development and performance of students in a high poverty school? A data-driven environment, professional development, and interactive assessment/intervention tools will raise the achievement of general and special education students with low ability.
Our first assertion is that reading comprehension will increase when strengths and/or weaknesses are identified and targeted with differentiated instruction. Secondly, instruction must start at the student's current grade level and become increasingly challenging as the student progresses. Finally, technology can facilitate and/or accelerate progress in reading comprehension.
D.O.R.A., Read180, My Access!, journals/logs, and portfolio development successfully provide instruction at current and progressive levels, while giving immediate feedback, and igniting intrinsic motivation within a child.
