Bridging the Gap: Crestview Literacy Project
-
Abstract
-
How can we better assess literacy development and design and implement research-based strategies to increase early literacy achievement in primary students? Professional development, emerging technology, frequent assessments and new intervention strategies helped build a data driven environment. Our assertions were: Professional development will support a systematic change in our program; Progress monitoring will increase teacher awareness of student literacy achievement and interim benchmark goals; and Progress monitoring data will aid teachers with intervention strategies. By using Palm Pilots and Wireless Generation software, we regularly progress monitored and implemented intervention strategies based on student need. Through observation, analysis of DIBELS data, newly learned grouping strategies, and a technology aided intervention toolkit, we were able to support a systematic change in our literacy program and increased student performance.
