Fluency Meets Technology
-
Abstract
-
Research was conducted exploring the influence of technology on fluency practice. The question was "Will technology, as a part of fluency instruction and intervention, improve student fluency and comprehension at a rate faster than traditional fluency instruction?" Students used Read Naturally software several times per week over the course of the study. They practiced repeated readings, monitored comprehension, and took teacher-timed tests to assess fluency progress. Data consisted of a baseline DIBELS score, story-by-story fluency scores, mid-way and final DIBELS scores to verify increases. Students receiving treatment increased fluency at a greater rate than their peers who practiced fluency through Readers' Theater. The researcher will continue to use the software for intervention purposes.
