Cyber-Portfolios: Motivating Our Students to Speak More
Abstract
An important goal of a foreign language classroom is for students to be able to communicate orally, yet it is often the most infrequently practiced skill in the curriculum. We changed that in our classes this year through the use of Cyber-Portfolios, which included a concentration on authentic speaking and listening practice as well as reflective learning activities. With the addition of computer technology and with the use of software such as Audacity and Skype, students were able to record their own speech, listen to their peers recordings, as well as conduct videoconferencing with native speakers. The increased practice and new technological methods relieved student anxiety, improved their attitude toward oral communication, and improved the students' speaking abilities overall.
