PalmPilots: Increase Student Motivation and Increase Understanding of Data Collection and Analysis in Real Life Situations

Abstract
Data collected from interviews, video tape and surveys at Washington Elementary School in Ashtabula showed that using Palm Pilots to gather and analyze real world data on the Waterways project helped students show improvement in the following areas:: Grade 4 students showed growth from September to November in: representing and interpreting data using tables and graphs, proposing and explaining interpretations and predictions based on data, describing the characteristics of a set of data, identifying the median and describing what it indicates. Grade 5 students showed growth from September to November in reading, constructing and interpreting tables and graphs, determining appropriate data to be collected to answer questions and displaying and communicating the data, and determining and using the range, mean, median, and mode and explaining what each does and does not indicate about the data. Grade 6 students showed growth from September to November in these areas: reading, constructing and interpreting graphs, and understanding the different information provided by measures of the center and the spread. We hypothesize that it was Palm Pilots that facilitated the application of ideas learned in class and enabled students to work together in groups to solve problems.
