Using Technology to Enhance Global Communication and Motivate Student Learning
-
Abstract
-
Our research question was divided into two parts: How can we encourage our students to become global communicators and does technology actually motivate students to want to learn? In order to find answers to these questions, we employed a variety of new technologies into our classroom as a means of using differentiated instruction. These technologies included Classroom Performance System, Mimioboards, digital video cameras, blogging, webpage design, and e-mailing through Think.com. Through a variety of data collection techniques, we were able to form three assertions: students really are more motivated in the classroom when updated technology is used in instruction, students do feel a need and a desire to communicate with others outside their realm of familiarity, and students can actually use technology to improve grammar and communication skills, if nothing more than an awareness of its importance. From this knowledge, we continued to use current technologies to reach all students, especially those who normally were unmotivated to learn. We pushed for differentiated instruction in our classrooms to keep from becoming stagnant in our teaching methods, and finally, we encouraged our fellow educators, and even parents, to use these new technologies as well.
