ASSIST Final Report & Participant Profiles
-
All ASSIST grant awardees were required to submit extensive documentation regarding their programs and place artifacts related to the programs' operations in a web repository maintained by Ohio SchoolNet (OSN). These profiles describe the school environment, the way the district setup student programs along with sharing their proceses.
A detailed analysis of the initiation, operation, and maintenance of these student technology intern programs comprises the middle section of the final report as well as each district profile. The types of issues examined include staffing, budgeting, supervising, and evaluating the impact on the delivery of services. A portion of each issue area analysis includes lessons learned as reported by the ASSIST grant awardees.

Program Description
-
The purpose of this initiative is to identify and collect field proven
technology support models where students augment professional technical
staff within the district. Our hope is that other districts may choose
to implement or adapt one of the models outlined as appropriate and
feasible to meet their demand for technical assistance.
The All Student System Interns Supporting Technology (ASSIST) program awarded 30 one-time grants of up to $10,000 in FY '02 to school districts in Ohio who
engage students in their deployment and utilization of computing
systems. The grants were scored on completeness and conformity with
ASSIST guidelines for participation.
The framework within
which the ASSIST program fits is the development of 21st Century skills
in Ohio's students. As outlined in the report those skills fall under
one of the following four categories:
- Digital Age Literacy;
- Inventive Thinking;
- Effective Communication;
- High Productivity.
Engaging students in real-world, technology use support issues builds on their developing
digital literacy while balancing that with problem solving, analysis,
and human interaction activities.
